A Texas Highway Patrol sergeant died in a car accident Thursday night in central Texas, the Texas DPS confirmed.
Sgt. William Keesee's patrol car went over a guardrail and into a creek on Highway 84 near Goldthwaite, about 100 miles northwest of Austin. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
A driver passing the scene reported the crash around 11:30 p.m. Thursday after seeing debris on the road.
The crash is under investigation.
"The DPS family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of Texas' finest, Sgt. Keesee. Our state has lost a great man and outstanding peace officer, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this very difficult time," said DPS Director Steven McCraw.
"During his more than 25 years of proudly serving this department and the people of Texas, Sgt. Keesee touched countless lives, and his selfless service and sacrifice will always be remembered."
Sgt. Keesee, who goes by Karl, was stationed in Brownwood. The DPS said he is the 217th DPS officer to die on the job in the department's 185 years.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement Friday in the wake of Keesee's passing:
"Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to Sergeant Keesee's family during this difficult time. It is important to remember that DPS officers put their lives on the line every day to protect Texas communities and we can never thank them enough for their service. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with his family and the DPS community as they heal from this tragedy."
