DESOTO, Texas -- Mayor Curtistene McCowan has one simple answer when it comes to the city's decision to postpone their annual Christmas parade due to a scheduled playoff game -- "DeSoto is a football town."

Monday, city officials announced the postponement of the parade that was originally scheduled to take place on Dec. 3.

“DeSoto is a football town and when our beloved DeSoto High School Eagles advance to the 6A D2 playoffs on the same date and time as our Holiday Parade, the parade must be postponed,” McCowan said.

“We have one high school and when our football team is headed for the state playoffs, the whole town supports them,” she added.

The DeSoto Eagles will face off against the Cedar Hill Longhorns at 5 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the AT&T Stadium.

"Several groups from DeSoto ISD had registered to participate, and many other groups want to attend the game as well," McCowan said. "So consequently, it makes sense to cancel the parade for December 3, 2016 and explore other options.”

City officials said the parade's new date will be announced soon.
