PLANO, Texas — On May 6, 2023, the city of Allen was devastated after a mass shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets claimed the lives of eight people and left half a dozen injured.
It's a day the community is still healing from. But in the aftermath of the tragedy, the city of Allen is extending its gratitude to their neighbors to the south in Plano, who answered its call in the time of need.
Monday, the city held a special ceremony to recognize the service and unified response of all the first responders in the city of Plano who jumped into action with little to no information.
"Your city's swift and selfless response truly exemplifies the spirit of solidarity and compassion that defines our neighboring cities," Allen city leaders said in a letter.
To mark the one-year anniversary, an 11-foot-tall memorial in honor of the victims is on display at the northwest interior section of the outlet mall. The memorial includes eight wind chimes in honor of the eight people who died in the shooting.
"The solidarity demonstrated by Plano's first responders serves as a shining example of the resilience and compassion that unites us in times of adversity," the letter reads.
A small black plaque that says "Always Remembered, May 6th, 2023" was placed in the flower bed at the base of the memorial. Mall officials say a permanent bronze plaque will eventually be installed where the temporary one is.
"On behalf of the City of Allen, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mayor Muns, the Plano City Council, and every individual who contributed to the relief effort," the letter said. "Moreover, your unwavering support has been a source of comfort and reassurance for our community as we continue to heal from this traumatic experience,"
