Somber win after Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup learns of brother's suicide

"We just found out after the ball game that his brother had committed suicide and just wanted to leave it at that. Obviously a very personal matter. We're all behind Michal and supporting him and his family," said Garrett.
Gallup grew up in a non-traditional family. Six of the 8 children were adopted.

It was a somber celebration after the Cowboys 22-19 victory.

Owner Jerry Jones spoke to the media shortly after the game. "We've had a tragedy, and we can't talk about it because his mother hasn't found out about it yet. It's not a player, but it's family,” said Jones.

Monday morning coach Jason Garrett confirmed on 105.3's "The Fan" that wide receiver Michael Gallup's brother killed himself. "We just found out after the ball game that his brother had committed suicide and just wanted to leave it at that. Obviously a very personal matter. We're all behind Michal and supporting him and his family,” said Garrett.

Gallup grew up in a non-traditional family. Six of the 8 children were adopted. In past interviews, he spoke about his siblings. "I was younger, but I was always bigger than my siblings, so I was always looking out for them being a little big brother,” said Gallup.

The rookie wide receiver grew up in Monroe, Georgia, about an hour outside Atlanta. So, Sunday's game was a homecoming of sorts. He said he looked forward to playing in front of a hometown crowd. "Everybody wants to go back to their home state to try and show out. You know, play good for your family and friends there,” said Gallup.

His college coach was at the game, but his mother, who he is extremely close to, was on a mission trip to Africa and is reportedly on her way back.

Coach Garrett told The Fan that they have a lot of love for Gallup and will be there to support him and his family. Gallup did not return home with the team, and it’s unclear if he will play on Thursday.

Jones issued the following statement:

“Our team and our entire organization are deeply saddened by the news of Michael’s loss. His family is our family. We share in the grief and pain that comes with something so personal and tragic. We offer our support, care and comfort for Michael, and we ask that all of those who have sons and daughters and brothers and sisters join us in keeping Michael and his wonderful family in their thoughts and prayers.”
