DALLAS — A local Democratic organization advocating for the LGBTQ+ community has issued a statement condemning the Texas Democratic Party Chair for statements it said implied "that trans Texans bear responsibility for the disappointing losses by Democrats in Texas."
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa, in an interview with the Austin-based radio station KUT, said transgender rights hurt Democrats at the polls. He specifically mentioned the Hyde Amendment, which has banned using federal funds for most abortions for nearly half a century.
“We can say, ‘Okay, we respect people's right to say we don't want my taxpayer money to be used for that, and at the same time support transgender rights,” Hinojosa told KUT. "I'm not saying that we need to take that position right now. But when those votes happen, we need to recognize that there are going to be long term political consequences when we do that."
Hinojosa went on to say that Texas Democrats need to acknowledge that their messaging on some issues isn't landing.
“You have a choice as a party," he said in the interview. "You could, for example, you can support transgender rights up and down all the categories where the issue comes up, or you can understand that there's certain things that we just go too far on, that a big bulk of our population does not support."
Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, in a statement from the executive team, said Hinojosa's rhetoric has no place in the Democratic Party.
"Blaming members of the LGBTQ+ community — particularly trans Texans who already face disproportionate discrimination and hostility — is deeply irresponsible and counterproductive," the group said. "The Texas Democratic Party should be a safe haven for all marginalized groups and should champion inclusion."
The group demanded Hinojosa issue a public apology, which he did Wednesday evening on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"I extend my sincerest apologies to those I hurt with my comments today," Hinojosa wrote. "I recognize the pain and frustration my words have caused."
Hinojosa further said transgender people deserve to be seen, valued and safe in Texas and in the Democratic Party.
"My unequivocal and unwavering support for LGBTQ+ Texans remains steadfast, and I am committed to ensuring our party never abandons you, especially when you need us most," he concluded.
