Overwhelming majority of the Texas Democratic National Delegation endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as party nominee

Shortly after the Texas delegation's call, ABC News and AP reported she secured enough delegates to become the presumptive nominee.

DALLAS — Monday night, the overwhelming majority of the Texas Democratic National Delegation endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as their party's nominee.

Shortly after, ABC News and the Associated Press reported she secured enough delegates to become the presumptive nominee.

Texas will send 273 delegates to the Democratic Convention, the third most delegates of any state behind just New York and California.

“Tonight, the Texas Democratic National Delegation proudly announced our endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as our party’s nominee for President," Texas Democratic Party and Texas National Delegation Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in a news release.

"Her historic tenure as the first Black and South Asian woman to hold the office of the Vice President has been marked by an unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and progress for all Americans. With her extensive experience, dedication to public service, and proven leadership, we believe Kamala Harris is uniquely qualified to defeat Donald Trump and lead our nation forward – championing the values and ideals that unite us as a country.”

Dallas City Councilman Omar Narvaez is a delegate and spoke with WFAA moments after the delegation decided on a Zoom call to endorse Harris.

"I’m pledged to President Biden, and if he’s with Kamala Harris for the nominee, to me that’s the natural choice and what we should be doing," he said.

"And to say we’re endorsing her is huge, we’re the third largest delegation in the nation going to Chicago."

Delia Parker-Mims is the chair of the Denton County Democratic Party. She told WFAA she believed it was critical the delegates pledged their support for Harris Monday night.

"We can go into this convention and try to fight it out," Parker-Mims said.

"But I’m fairly certain Kamala is going to come out on top, and I’d really like us to get on board with her quickly so we can start this process."
