DENTON COUNTY, Texas — The chair of the Denton County Democratic Party calls Kamala Harris’ selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her VP running mate an “amazing” pick.
“I’m calling them the '2 Live Crew,' but the good '2 Live.' They’re very lively,” Delia Parker-Mims told us on Inside Texas Politics.
Parker-Mims, who became chair in 2021, says Walz is more than just a safe pick.
She says it’s the right strategy.
“He is a safe pick. But he’s also a good pick that’s gonna bring in -- I’m going to say the ‘bubba’ vote -- that’s gonna bring in the rural vote, that’s gonna attract voters that are different than the demographic that she attracts,” Parker-Mims said.
Parker-Mims says she’s seen and felt the energy shift since Harris was anointed the Democratic nominee for President after Joe Biden stepped aside.
“It has been like a revival of the dead,” she said.
And she thinks having Harris-Walz at the top of the ticket will help Democratic candidates up and down the ballot here in Texas.
Parker-Mims told us that as they planned their get-out-the-vote strategy in Denton County, they were actually debating not including President Biden on any material and instead focusing on U.S. Senate candidate Colin Allred or some other issues, such as an anti-school voucher push.
“But with this new burst of energy, I don’t think there’s anything better than looking at Vice President Kamala’s face smiling on that door hanger with all of our candidates on the back saying this is how you save Democracy, and these are who you vote for,” said Parker-Mims.
