DALLAS — The Democratic primary for the District 16 seat in the Texas Senate features a rare occurrence -- in which the incumbent State Senator Nathan Johnson was challenged by State Rep. Victoria Neave Criado on Super Tuesday.
Each of the candidates spoke with Inside Texas Politics earlier in the election cycle.
Neave Criado said she challenged Johnson over "the threat of Democracy that’s being posed by Donald Trump, Ken Paxton, Greg Abbott," saying "we don’t need somebody who’s not going to be standing up to fight."
For his part, Johnson said he welcomed the challenge.
Johnson, who composed music for the North American dub of the Japanese anime "Dragon Ball Z" in a past life, first took office in January 2019 after beating incumbent Republican Don Huffines for his seat in the 2018 election.
The winner of this primary will face the Republican challenger in the general election on Nov. 5.
