DALLAS — Incumbent Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown faced former Sheriff Lupe Valdez in the Democratic primary runoff election for the job May 28.

No Republican ran, so the winner will run unopposed in November.

In early vote totals, Brown led Valdez with 69% of the vote to Valdez's 31%.

Valdez was elected Dallas County Sheriff in 2004, becoming the first Latina to hold the office. She stayed in the role until she ran for governor in 2017, losing to incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. When Valdez left, Brown, the chief deputy of general services, was appointed interim sheriff.

When she was sworn in as sheriff in 2018, Brown became the first Black sheriff in Dallas County and one of five Black female sheriffs in the country.

Brown has since been elected Dallas County sheriff twice.
