ROCKWALL, Texas — The Texas House District 33 Republican primary is headed for a runoff after a close fight between incumbent State Rep. Justin Holland and Katrina Pierson, who consulted Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
As of Wednesday morning, both Republicans had earned around 39% of the vote, below the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff. Pierson led Holland by less than 200 votes.
Dennis London finished in third with around 22% of the vote. Only the top two finishers advance to a runoff.
The challengers came against Holland after he didn't support attempts by Gov. Greg Abbott to pass bills for funding school vouchers.
As results came in, it's looked more and more likely that Holland and Pierson were headed for a runoff.
A runoff election would be held Tuesday, May 28.
