DALLAS — Democrat Julie Johnson has defeated Republican Darrell Day and Liberarian Kevin Hale to become the new U.S. Representative for District 32.
The district is currently represented by U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, who chose not to run again in order to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz for his seat. But Cruz defeated him in the election.
Johnson is the only candidate currently in office, as a State Representative for the 115th District in the Texas House of Representatives. She has held the office since defeating incumbent Republican Matt Rinaldi in 2018, and is one of Dallas County's first two openly gay elected officials. Johnson is also the first Texas state representative with a spouse of the same gender. She defeated nine other challengers in the Democratic primary last March, earning 50.4% of the vote. She has previously voted against state abortion bans and says she wants to work to codify Roe v. Wade into law.
Other issues Johnson is running on include increasing access to affordable housing, decriminalizing and legalizing cannabis, and implementing policies to address climate change.
Day has previous experience as the bureau chief of United Press International, as well as the editor of two magazines and a business owner. He defeated David Blewitt in the March Republican primary to become the Republican candidate for the seat.
According to Day's campaign website, issues he is running on include securing the U.S.-Mexico border, school choice, and anti-abortion legislation.
Hale's campaign website lists the platform of the Libertarian party, including opposition to the death penalty, decriminalization of prostitution, and leaving education to be provided by the free market.
District 32 makes up much of northeastern Dallas County, as well as slivers of southern Colin and Denton Counties.
