DALLAS — Shelley Luther, the former North Texas salon owner who made national headlines after she reopened her salon in defiance of COVID-19 shutdown orders during the pandemic, was elected to the state house.

She defeated Reggie Smith in the Republican primary in a rematch with 53% of the vote to face Drake in the general election.

Luther previously lost to Smith, the incumbent, in the Republican primary in District 62 in 2022.

She’d previously run for state senate in 2020. Luther lost the Republican primary in the race in District 30, which covers an area of the state northwest of Dallas and Fort Worth, including Sherman, Denton, Weatherford, Stephenville and Wichita Falls, to Drew Springer. Springer won the runoff election that year with 56% of the vote to Luther’s 44%.

Luther first made headlines after she opened her Far North Dallas salon, Salon A La Mode, in defiance of COVID-19 shutdown orders who was briefly jailed for contempt of court and violating a temporary restraining order.
