Polling locations in Dallas, Collin, Denton counties closed on Election Day following storms

Polling locations in Dallas will now be open until 9 p.m., Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins announced, due to prior outages.

COLLIN COUNTY, Texas — Severe storms led to power outages, damage to buildings and flooding on Election Day causing over a hundred polling locations to lose power and creating delays at others. 

Tuesday, May 28 is Election Day for the 2024 primary runoff elections. A runoff election is triggered when no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in an election. This upcoming runoff follows the March 5 primary election

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins announced Tuesday that 103 polling locations are without power as of 11:50 a.m. about 180 locations are open and operating as normal, Jenkins said. Dallas County utilizes vote centers, which means voters can vote at any polling location regardless of their address. 

Due to these outages, polls in Dallas County will remain open until 9 p.m., Jenkins announced in a post on X.

Polls in Rockwall County will also remain open until 8 p.m.

Officials in Collin County said that three voting locations are currently closed due to power outages or water damages: 

- Collin College Plano Campus, 2800 E Spring Creek Pkwy, Plano, TX 
- Harrington Library, 1501 18th St, Plano, TX
- Michael J. Felix Community Center, 3815 Sachse Rd E, Sachse, TX

In Denton County, the polling location for voters in precincts 2091, 2092, 2093, 2094 and 2098 moved from Prestonwood Baptist Church to the Lewisville ISD Career Center East at 2553 FM 544, Lewisville, TX. 

Two Tarrant County polling locations, St John Baptist Church in Euless and Blue Mound Community Center in Blue Mound, lost power during the storm but are currently operating as normal using backup generators, officials said.

Voters will have an extra hour to cast their ballot in Kaufman County. Officials there announced polling places would close at 8 p.m. rather than 7 p.m. 

Voters will also have an extra hour to cast their votes in Rockwall County, where officials announced polls will be open until 8 p.m. The Rockwall County Library is on backup power with a one-hour wait.
