TEXAS, USA — The polls closed across most of the Lone Star state at 7 p.m. Tuesday and results started rolling in.
At the top of the ticket is the presidential race between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
Texas, long a Republican stronghold, and its electoral votes went to Trump.
The most closely watched race in Texas, though, is the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Colin Allred.
AP and ABC news called that race for Cruz Thursday night.
There are also Congressional seats and competitive seats in the state legislature. Among the most competitive statehouse races, this cycle is in North Texas – incumbent Angie Chen Button and Democratic challenger Averie Bishop in Texas House District 112 representing parts of Richardson, Garland, Rowlett and Sachse, and incumbent Republican Morgan Meyer in his rematch against Democratic challenger Elizabeth Ginsberg in District 108, representing the Park Cities and parts of Dallas.
Early vote totals showed Button leading Bishop and Meyer leading Ginsberg.
Democrats have historically fared well in Texas’ larger counties, while Republicans have traditionally won in more rural areas by wide margins. Suburban areas have become increasingly competitive in Texas in recent years.
