DENTON, Texas — Brandon Gill held a strong lead that would be good enough to avoid a runoff for the Republican nomination in North Texas' District 26 Congressional race.
As of Wednesday morning, Gill had earned nearly 50,000 votes, good for 58% in the primary election.
Gill overnight declared victory and thanked former President Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for their endorsements.
The District 26 seat has long been held by Rep. Michael Burgess, who first took office in 2003, but he will be vacating the seat at the end of his term next January.
Eleven candidates competed to be the GOP nominee for the safe-Republican district, which includes parts of Denton, Tarrant, Wise and Cooke Counties.
The race attracted hundreds of thousands of dollars of big-money donations and big-name endorsements, too.
Gill, a newcomer to the district, is the son-in-law of conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza.
His next-best challenger was Scott Armey, who had earned about 15% of the vote. Southlake Mayor John Huffman earned around 10% of the vote for third place.
