DALLAS COUNTY, Texas — Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown appears headed for a runoff in the Democratic primary against former sheriff Lupe Valdez.
As of Wednesday morning, Brown had around 42% of the vote, while Valdez, who left the sheriff position to run for governor in 2018, had around 38%. A candidate needs 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff.
Brown has been sheriff since 2018, replacing Valdez, who had served from 2005 to 2017.
Valdez left the position in her campaign for governor in 2018. However, she was defeated in that election -- soundly -- by incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.
Brown and Valdez would head to a runoff on Tuesday, May 28.
