DALLAS — Julie Johnson appeared to narrowly avoid a runoff in the crowded Democratic primary to fill Colin Allred's old seat in North Texas' Congressional District 32.
Johnson as of Wednesday morning held 50.44% of the vote, with all precincts reporting, more than the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
The winner of the November election will fill in the Congressional seat being vacated by Allred, who himself is seeking the US Senate seat currently held by Sen. Ted Cruz.
Johnson, a state representative, is looking to make history as the first openly LGBTQ lawmaker in Congress from the South and the first woman to hold the District 32 seat. She was the frontrunner heading into Tuesday, and the clear leading vote-getter.
Brian Williams was sitting in second place in the primary with 19.14% of the vote.
The general election is on November 5.
