FSU closes campus ahead of football game at SMU due to Tropical Storm Helene. Here's what the Seminoles coach said about travel plans

The Sept. 28 game will be the first meeting between the Mustangs and Seminoles.

DALLAS — Florida State University will close Wednesday morning and will remain closed until Sunday, Sept. 29, as Tropical Storm Helene moves towards the Gulf Coast.

This comes three days ahead of its ACC conference game against SMU at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Saturday's game is set to be the first time the Mustangs and Seminoles meet on the gridiron.

Florida State held practice Tuesday morning but might need to adjust its travel schedule before playing in Dallas on Saturday.

“We’re continuing to track that. There’s still a lot of information (to come)," Seminoles coach Mike Norvell told the Associated Press Tuesday. "Today is a big day for gaining more information of what could be our reality. I feel good about the plans that we have. I feel good about any potential adjustments, if necessary. But it’s something that we’re absolutely tracking.”

Florida State announced they would cancel classes and close all campuses starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, through Friday, Sept. 27 because of Helene. The university is expected to reopen on Monday.

University officials say students who plan to stay on campus should prepare now for the potential of being indoors all day Thursday. FSU employees are being asked to talk directly with their supervisors about storm-related assignments.

Helene formed into a tropical storm Tuesday in the Caribbean Sea and could strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane before approaching the northeast Gulf Coast.
