Stranded kayakers rescued by cruise ship in Gulf of Mexico

The Carnival Jubilee team spotted the men off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and were able to quickly rescue them.

ISLA MUJERES, Quintana Roo — Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Two stranded kayakers were rescued Monday by the crew of the Carnival Jubilee.

The two men said their boat sank and they used a kayak to stay afloat until they got help. The team on the Carnival Jubilee, which had left out of Galveston, spotted the men off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and were able to quickly rescue them.

A Houston man was on the ship when he said he felt something out of the ordinary.

"I was actually sleeping and I felt the boat stopping, which is kind of weird on a cruise ship, right? I looked out (of the window) wondering 'is there something going on?" Amir Najafi said.

Najafi and his family are on a seven-day cruise. He said he didn't expect to see what he saw when he looked out the window.

"Lo and behold, I saw these guys and wondered, 'What are these people doing in the middle of the sea off the coast of Mexico very close to Cancún?'" Najafi said.

Najafi said he was happy the ship was able to make the rescue. They were welcomed aboard the ship and were evaluated by the medical staff. They were also given food.

The ship's team kept in contact with the Mexican Navy and arranged a transfer, which was completed shortly after the rescue.

The Jubilee stayed on schedule and was heading to Mahogany Bay, Roatan on Tuesday.
