Turkey deliberately sunk an A300 Airbus jet off the Aegean coast over the weekend to try to attract more tourists to the area.
The 177 foot plane was submerged about 50 miles south of Izmir in Kuşadası, a resort town. The idea is to create an artificial reef for divers.
"We expect some 250,000 domestic and foreign tourists per year to come here for diving," Özlem Çerçioğlu, a mayor for the region, told Turkey's Daily Sabah newspaper.
"With the project, Kuşadası will hopefully close this summer … with the fewest losses and make the people of (Kuşadası) and the people in this business smile," said Çerçioğlu.
Turkey is attempting to boost its battered tourism industry following several deadly terrorist attacks.
Three other smaller planes were sunk off Turkish beach resorts in recent years, according to the Daily Sabah.
