A DART bus ran over the 53-year-old man just before 7 a.m. at the West Transfer Station on San Jacinto in downtown Dallas.
Police said he was hit by an oncoming bus after he stepped off a curb. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Dallas and DART police blocked off the area for hours to talk to witnesses.
The man was transferring from one bus to another, according to witnesses. It was cold and his hood was pulled up over his head to stay warm. Witnesses believe the hood was blocking his view as he stepped into the DART driveway and right into the path of the oncoming bus.
We re sorry that this happened, but the reality is that during cold weather and during bad weather, our operators are always on alert, and we want the public paying attention as well, said Mark Ball, a DART spokesman.
DART is still investigating the accident as well as the bus driver.
DART said at the time of the accident, the driver was pulling out at a slow speed, but as soon as he realized what happened, he hit the brakes. However, it was too late.
Police are not releasing the name of the man who died.
No charges have been filed in this case.
