DALLAS — A young boy was shot and killed at an apartment complex in southern Dallas on Sunday afternoon, police said.
Police said officers responded to a shooting around 2 p.m. at the Signature at Southern Oaks Apartments, near Illinois Avenue and Interstate 45.
According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that there was some sort of fight between two female juveniles prior to the shooting. Police said it appeared one of the girls pulled out a gun and fired at the other girl.
Police said the bullet missed the girl but struck the young boy, who was a bystander. The boy was transported to a hospital, where he died.
"It appears to be a beef between two juveniles that led to a deadly outcome," Dallas police spokesperson Sgt. Warren Mitchell said.
Neighbors in the area told WFAA the boy was 11 years old. Police, on Monday, said the suspect was 14 years old.
The suspect ran away to a nearby apartment complex on Overton Road, where she was taken into custody, according to police.
"I find it hard and disheartening. This senseless violence, especially with the young people," resident Cassie Sheffield told WFAA.
Sheffield is with the organization "No More Violence," which campaigns against violence among youth.
"How are these young people getting a hold of so many weapons," Sheffield said. "... I pray for more help in the community."
Further details were not released as the investigation continues.
