Vice President Kamala Harris is coming to Dallas this week -- and here's why

Harris became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. while at Howard University. She's the keynote speaker at its annual convention in Dallas this year.

DALLAS — Green and pink have taken over Downtown Dallas.

From July 5 to 11, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) is hosting its 71st biennial Boule at Dallas' Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

Vice President Kamala Harris, a member of the sorority since she joined in 1986 while a student at Howard University, will deliver the keynote speech at the convention on Wednesday, July 10.

Harris has spoken at multiple AKA events throughout the years, including the 70th Boule that was hosted in Orlando, Florida, in 2022.

The stop is a part of the Vice President's "Summer of Engagement" tour, which finds Harris speaking at multiple events across the country. On July 6, the vice president spoke at the 30th ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans. After Dallas, she'll head to Las Vegas to have a moderated conversation at Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.'s Grand Boule.

AKA was founded in 1908 at Howard University, an HBCU in Washington D.C. and Harris' alma mater. It is America's oldest Greek-letter organization founded by Black women.

Today, its sisterhood is more than 360,000 members strong, and it boasts chapters in 12 countries.

This isn't the first time AKA's biennial national convention has taken over Dallas. The sorority previously hosted its Boule in Dallas in 1968 and again in 2000.
