WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas — Homes in White Settlement were evacuated on New Years Eve after a new homeowner found an "older style hand grenade" inside their residence, which was under renovation, police confirmed to WFAA.
White Settlement Police Chief Christopher Cook said the hand grenade was found at a home located in the 9200 block of Lanham Street, and out of an abundance of caution, nearby residences were evacuated.
The Fort Worth Fire Department Arson and Bomb Squad assessed the device to render it safe. Cook posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, at 5:02 p.m. saying that "the device did not contain explosive material" and "the scene is now safe."
Cook shared photos of the older style hand grenade on X.
According to Cook, the home had "been vacant for some time" prior to the current resident owning the home.
Nearby residents were allowed back into their homes Sunday evening.
