WAXAHACHIE, Texas — A 9mm handgun was found in the backpack of a special education student with disabilities at Waxahachie High School, a police confirmed to WFAA.

A district spokesperson provided WFAA with the letter sent home to parents, but said it could not comment any further.

According to the letter, one of the school's staff members "found the weapon when retrieving the student’s daily supplies from their backpack and immediately reported it to the School Resource Officer and campus administration." The WPD officer took possession within moments of the discovery, the letter said.

"We do not believe any student had knowledge of this situation prior to its detection by our staff member," the letter continued.

The district fully cooperated with the Waxahachie Police Department, and the "school day proceeded on as normal," according to the letter.

"We are grateful for the fast response of our staff and the Waxahachie Police Department," the school's principal concluded in the letter to parents.

Waxahachie police told WFAA it could not release any further details about the incident aside from the type of gun recovered and what was detailed in the school's letter due to the age of the student involved.
