Water recreation activities will be allowed to resume at White Rock Lake Sunday, Dallas parks officials say

The lake was closed for water recreation March 19 due to elevated bacterial levels in the water after a sewage spill.

DALLAS — Water recreation activities will be able to return to White Rock Lake on Sunday, Dallas parks officials say.

The news comes about a week after more than 1.5 million gallons of sewage from Plano overflowed and spilled into White Rock Lake Creek, which flows down into Dallas and eventually into White Rock Lake, because of a pump malfunction. The lake has been closed for water recreation activities since March 19 after officials say they detected elevated bacterial levels in White Rock Lake after the sewage overflow.

Park officials say the decision came after Dallas Water Utilities reported “recent water sampling results are within normal weather related, pre-incident levels.”

“Park visitors can enjoy activities like fishing, boating, and rowing,” Park officials said in a news release Saturday. “While swimming remains prohibited, the water launch area at White Rock Lake Dog Park is available for pets.”

Dallas Water Utilities will continue to take water samples from the lake for testing through March 29.

“Following best practices, park officials will continue receiving testing data from DWU and will enact its maintenance operations protocols for restricting water recreation activities if water quality deteriorates from upstream incidents and major weather storms,” Dallas parks officials said.
