Walmart Inc. has opened a 730,000-square-foot perishable distribution center in Lancaster, the latest investment by the corporate behemoth in southern Dallas County.

Located at 940 East Pleasant Run Road, the distribution center will employ more than 500 people full-time, according to a July 16 announcement. It is the retail giant’s second facility in Lancaster, following the 2023 opening of a fulfillment center in the city.

Lancaster's convenient location and access to transportation infrastructure and a skilled workforce helped attract Walmart, a spokesperson said.

The facility will receive and process fresh produce, eggs, dairy and frozen items for delivery to nearby Walmart locations and allows the retailer to process more than double the volume of a traditional distribution center. It is the second of five new perishable distribution centers for Walmart (NYSE: WMT).

"This is a game-changer for our city, blending our skilled workforce with cutting-edge technology to deliver fresh, high-quality food," Lancaster Mayor Clyde Hairston said in a statement. "Beyond innovation, this center will create sustainable jobs for our community and enhance access to nutritious food."

While Walmart is opening the new distribution center, it has also scaled back its corporate workforce in other parts of DFW, including closing a Sam's Club technology office in downtown Dallas and shuttering a call center in Carrollton, impacting more than 1,400 employees. Many of the impacted workers were expected to relocate or continue their employment in new positions within the organization.

The company employs more than 176,000 associates in Texas and has 590 stores in the state.
