DALLAS — Crowded roadways, out-of-state license plates, and U-Haul trucks have become a common sight in the Dallas metroplex.
U-Haul released a list of the top moving destinations for people who rented their trucks for a one-way move last year. Dallas placed ninth on the 2023 list.
Palm Bay-Melbourne, Florida snagged the No. 1 spot.
Of all the destinations in the Lone Star State, Austin landed the No. 5 spot, while College Station-Bryan ranked No. 6, and Dallas came in at No. 9.
“We’ve seen an influx of U-Haul trucks coming in, which means people are coming to Dallas to stay,” said Ken Cummingham, U-Haul Company of East Dallas president.
Do-it-yourself movers arriving in Dallas accounted for 50% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in and out of the market (49% departures) in 2023, according to the U-Haul's Growth Index.
U-Haul calculates growth cities by each city’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul trucks, trailers and U-Box moving container transactions that happen annually.
“The culture here is great. People from all over the world move here and come together. Dallas is a melting pot. The city has great schools and colleges. The economy is great and it’s a good place to raise a family," said Cummingham.
To keep up with the high demand, U-Haul added two new U-Box warehouses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
