TROY, Texas — A Troy, Texas family was reportedly lost at sea after their vessel capsized off the coast of Alaska over the weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to 6 News on Monday, Aug. 5.
Earlier, a family friend, Stetson Chase, shared the news on Facebook. She said Mary Maynard, her husband David and their two sons haven't been found, despite the U.S. Coast Guard's search efforts near Homer, Alaska.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, the Coast Guard got a call about a 28-foot vessel taking on water around 7 p.m., according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Shannon Kerney. At the time, the vessel was reportedly carrying eight people, four of whom were rescued by a good Samaritan in the area and are expected to be ok.
The Coast Guard continued to search for the Maynards, but later suspended their search on Sunday, Aug. 4.
Chase told 6 News it's presumed the boat sank completely.
"This is tragic," Chase shared on Facebook. "... I think I can vouch for many that they were a wonderful, caring and loving family that deserves to be brought home. As her mother stated, prayers are all we have."
Kerney says many factors come into play when suspending a search, including likelihood of survival and water temperature.
In this case, the water was reported to be 51 degrees.
"Any time we make a decision to suspend a search and rescue case is a very difficult one to make," Kerney explained. "Cases that are suspended, they're only suspended pending the development of new information. If anything comes to light, any new information that we get, we're more than happy and willing to go out and continue our search. Our hearts are definitely with the families right now as they grieve."
Troy ISD Superintendent Neil Jeter confirmed the two children go to two of their schools. He added that counselors are aware of the situation and are available for students and parents if they are in need.
