ARLINGTON, Texas — At least 40 cows died after a trailer carrying just over 80 cows overturned in Arlington Monday, police said.
The accident happened a short time after 9:25 p.m. along Baird Farm Road overpass over Interstate 30, according to the Arlington Police Department. Police found that the trailer driver took the Baird Farm Road exit off westbound I-30. The driver misjudged how much space he had to turn, causing him to turn quickly and the trailer to tip over, police said.
Inside that overturned trailer are 83 head of cattle, police said.
Arlington PD shut down Baird Farm Road in both directions while they investigated and worked to clear the accident. The Arlington Fire Department was also called to the scene to assist.
As of 6 a.m., the trailer was removed and some of the cows were moved to smaller trailers. Police estimate that 40 to 45 animals were killed. One cow escaped but was struck by another vehicle and died.
