Northbound and southbound lanes are closed following a deadly crash Monday morning on Interstate 45 at Loop 12 in southern Dallas. A female driver died after she crashed into an off-duty retired officer who was working to block a lane for a road crew, police said.
Officers responded to the crash about 4:35 a.m. The retired, off-duty officer was working security and parked in an SUV in the left lane of northbound 9000 Julius Scepps Freeway (I-45), Dallas police said. The officer was parked to block for a road crew with emergency lights activated, police said.
The unknown female driver was headed northbound on I-45 in a gray Nissan.
The female driver changed lanes from the center to the left lane, police said. She then collided into the back of the off-duty officer's SUV.
The unknown female driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Dallas Fire-Rescue.
The off-duty officer was transported to a local hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue and was in stable condition.
Lanes are blocked from Illinois Avenue to Simpson Stuart Road. An alternate route is Bonnie View Road, Highway 342 and Highway 310.
