A growing North Texas suburb will get first major grocery store

Sunnyvale is getting its first major grocery store, officials announced.

SUNNYVALE, Texas — A growing North Texas suburb is getting its first major grocery store.

Sunnyvale on Tuesday announced its city council has approved an incentive for a Tom Thumb store at the Gateway Park shopping center on Belt Line Road and Town East Boulevard.

The store will include the full-service grocery store, a gas station and a convenience store.

The city is providing a $3 million incentive "to ensure a 2026 opening," according to a city news release. While the city provided the 2026 timetable, Tom Thumb officials said the store is aiming to open by 2025. An exact date hasn't been set yet.

When the store does open, it will be part of a $120 million development at Gateway Park, which will also be home to other retail stores, restaurants and athletic facilities.

“The Town Council is thrilled to provide our residents with this investment,” Mayor Saji George, who also serves as the Chair of the Town’s 4B Economic Development Corporation, said in the release. “Our goal when looking to attract and retain businesses is to ensure that they aligned with our community’s essential needs and identity. We hope this development is put to great use as we look to further improve our quality of life.”

Sunnyvale, which sits north and east of Mesquite, has seen new housing developments in recent years, as the town's population has grown to over 8,300 residents, up from around 5,000 in 2010, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

The planned Tom Thumb also marks another development in the North Texas grocery scene. While H-E-B, the popular South Texas-based grocer, has moved into the Metroplex's biggest counties, companies like Tom Thumb and Kroger, which have long-dominated the grocery market here, have also added new stores.
