Why are Texas, U.S. flags at half-staff?

According to Gov. Greg Abbott's website, the flags will be displayed at half-staff to honor the late Houston congresswoman.

TEXAS, USA — You'll notice on Thursday, Aug. 1, Texas and U.S. flags will be at half-staff.

What are the flags being lowered for? 

Both the State of Texas and U.S. flags will be lowered to honor Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, of Houston. Lee died in mid-July, her family announced, after she had been fighting pancreatic cancer

The flags at Houston City Hall and municipal buildings have been flown at half-staff since Monday, July 29 until Thursday, Aug. 1. The flag status order extended to buildings statewide on Aug. 1. 

Jackson's Celebration of Life Service is set for 11 a.m. Aug. 1 at Fallbrook Church at 12512 Walters Road in Houston. Vice President Kamala Harris Harris will deliver a eulogy at Rep. Jackson Lee’s service. You can watch the service here.

President Joe Biden came to Houston on Monday to pay his respects.

"On behalf of Texas, the First Lady and I offer our thoughts and prayers to the family in their time of mourning," Abbott said via a statement on his website. "I urge all Texans to appropriately remember Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s life of service to our state and nation."

The governor's office are encourages individuals, businesses, and other political subdivisions and entities to fly their flags at half-staff for the same length of time as a mark of respect.
