‘Drive Sober. No Regrets’ campaign aims to curb drunk driving in Texas during the holidays

TXDOT wants drivers to be reminded as celebrations pick up and people may be tempted to grab the keys after a few drinks.

DALLAS — The holidays are supposed to be a jolly time, but for the 1,246 families of the people killed by drunk drivers in Texas last year – we know this season won't be the same.

TxDOT wants drivers to keep that in mind for the rest of the month as celebrations and gatherings pick up and more people may be tempted to grab the keys after a few drinks.

“Try to plan ahead, but remember that plans often change. If drinking is going to be part of your holiday gathering played safe and organize a sober ride home ahead of time,” said Ruby Martinez, the department’s traffic safety program manager.

Hold your friends accountable! If you see someone drinking at the holiday party and try to drive, let them know – that’s a no-no.

Last year around this time, TxDOT says there were 108 people killed and more than 200 badly injured in alcohol-related crashes across the state.

That's why the department launched it's "Drive Sober. No Regrets" campaign.

The campaign starts on Dec. 16 and runs through Jan. 2, just as New Year's celebrations come to an end. That means more officers out looking for and arresting drunk drivers.

During the campaign, TXDOT is setting up a mobile video exhibit across the state to remind people about the dangers and tragic outcomes of drinking and driving. You'll hear from people who were impacted firsthand.

If you're ever thinking about whether or not to call a sober ride, think about this: A DWI can cost up to $17,000 in fines and fees and land you in jail.

Another thing to keep in mind: A new state law requires drunk drivers who kill a parent to pay up to 18 years of child support

So consider all of that before getting behind the wheel drunk.
