FORT WORTH — The Mayfest storm was a $2 billion weather event that tore through Fort Worth and was one of the costliest hail storms on record.

"We were lucky nobody was hurt worse than they were," said Jeff Hicks.

It was the first year Hicks started working as the festival electrician.

Today, he still works as an electrician for Mayfest. Taking a break from festival preparations, he told WFAA about what happened 20 years ago.

"I was on the south end of the park," he said. "We heard this noise, and it sounded like a tornado coming."

Front house engineer Tim Gamble also has a vivid memory of the great storm, but for different reasons.

Twenty years ago, to the day of the storm, Gamble's daughter was born.

"Every year my daughter has a birthday we always talk about that storm," he said.

Car windshields were smashed, 400 people were injured and baseball-sized hail covered the fields at Trinity Park.

But, take a ride through the park Thursday, 20 years later, and Mayfest is set to start under blue skies and sun.
