FORT WORTH, Texas — One person of interest is in custody after another person was shot in the face Friday afternoon just blocks from a high school homecoming parade, Fort Worth police say.
The shooting took place at about 1:49 p.m. in the 5700 block of Shelton Street, police say.
Officers arrested the person of interest following a more than two-mile police chase during which the person threw a handgun out of a car window, police said.
The victim, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, drove up to police who were nearby blocking traffic for the Eastern Hills High School homecoming parade, authorities said.
Video posted on social media showed officers tending to a wound on the victim's face just steps from the parade.
No one from the school was hurt, police said, but the school did rush students inside and put the building on a "soft lockdown."
"It’s just heartbreaking that we have to deal with this situation even in a school zone," said Antonio Harris, a grandparent at the school who was filming the parade as it went by.
"We should be celebrating, having fun, we have to deal with someone sitting there bleeding out and in disbelief himself," he said.
Fort Worth ISD sent a letter to parents of students in Eastern Hills High School.
"Earlier today our campus was placed on lockdown due to a situation taking place in the neighborhood, outside our campus," the district stated. "This occurred at the same time as our parade, which was wrapping up, and all students were brought inside the building."
The lockdown was lifted once police assessed the situation and determined the campus wasn't at risk, the letter detailed.
"Safety is the top priority on our campus, and it is our commitment to communicate with you when a situation impacting our students and staff takes place in our school," the letter stated.
Police say they are searching for shell casings and any video of the shooting to determine the motive.
