KELLER, Texas — After more than two months in the hospital, a Keller teenager with big track and field dreams has been released from the hospital after being run over by a drunk driver.
The family of 14-year-old Nina Alvarez said in a post on their GoFundMe page that she is going home.
"I must confess that I have many mixed emotions. I am happy because God granted me the miracle that Nina can return home. On the other hand, I have a lot of fear because she is still very fragile and needs a lot of care. But I know that God will give me strength," the post reads.
The family Alvarez says running is her passion. Nina is a student at Indian Springs Middle School with her sights set on being a high school track star next year.
The Keller Police Department said the driver who struck her should not have been behind the wheel at all.
On April 4 around 6:30 p.m., police responded to a person hit on Bear Creek Parkway. They found the 14-year-old lying in the street. Keller PD says the driver, 67-year-old Michael Mango, cooperated at the scene. Mango was later charged with Intoxication assault with a vehicle causing bodily injury.
Nina's mother knew something went wrong on her daughter's run because they tracked her on an app and suddenly there was no movement.
"I look forward to hearing her voice, but I know that will take time and I must be patient," her mother said in a GoFundMe post update.
Her family says they will attend the Keller Summer Nights on June 20 and 27 wearing "Together4Nina" shirts. The t-shirts will also be available to purchase to help with Nina's long road to recovery.
