A North Texas city was placed under mandatory stage 3 water restrictions Friday. Here's why

City officials say they're working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on the issue.

BLUE MOUND, Texas — The city of Blue Mound in Tarrant County has called for mandatory water restrictions Friday after their main water pump failed, limiting water supply production.

As of 2 p.m. Friday, officials say all the city's customers were placed under mandatory stage 3 water restrictions, including:

  • Prohibiting landscape watering
  • Prohibiting water on paved areas (including runoff from garden or lawn watering), and hosing of pavement or buildings
  • Prohibited draining of swimming pools
  • Prohibiting operation of ornamental fountains or ponds
  • Prohibiting washing all vehicles

Officials say the restrictions were put in place to maintain adequate water supply for drinking and firefighting purposes.

On Saturday, the city released an update saying the well contractor was on site and starting repairs.

In a notice, Blue Mound’s Public Works director Sean Densmore said in a notice posted on the city’s website that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was notified of the issue and staff is working with them to monitor the situation.

“The City thanks you for your patience and understanding of the issue,” Densmore’s letter continued.  “We will keep you up to date on the repairs and further information as we receive it.”

The city said Monday that an initial inspection of the main water well found gravel in the casing, which damaged the pump.

"The pipe casing may have failed as well. The casing will be scoped on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the water restrictions will remain in affect," city officials said.
