ARLINGTON, Texas — A driver was arrested after allegedly fatally hitting a motorcyclist before attempting to run away, causing witnesses to apprehend him until officers arrived, Arlington police said.

Officers responded to a crash around 1:07 a.m. Saturday, Nov 16 in the 2700 block of North Collins Street, according to a press release from the Arlington Police Department.

When officers arrived they found a 55-year-old motorcyclist lying unresponsive in the roadway, the release states. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. Police did not immediately release additional information about the victim.

Witnesses told police they saw a truck driving northbound along North Collins Street, weaving in and out of lanes attempting to pass other drivers when the truck swerved into the center lane and hit a motorcycle traveling southbound, the release states.

Witnesses then describe the suspect, 27-year-old Thomas Kelly Jr., exiting the truck and throwing multiple cans in a nearby field before running away, police said. Witnesses ran after him, caught him and held him until officers arrived, police said.

Kelly Jr. refused to perform field sobriety tests but investigators observed beer cans in the area and believe he was intoxicated, police said.

He was booked on charges of intoxication manslaughter, collision involving death and tampering, the release states.
