Thomas Jefferson HS principal responds to swastika graffiti, racial slurs found in bathroom

WFAA obtained photos of the antisemitic act drawn on the bathroom stall along with hate speech that read "Why do black people exist."

DALLAS — School officials have notified parents about swastika graffiti and racial slurs discovered in the Thomas Jefferson High School bathroom.

A letter from principal Ben Jones was sent out Tuesday afternoon saying "This incident is deeply concerning and there is simply no place for discriminatory acts in our schools."

WFAA obtained photos of the antisemitic act drawn on the bathroom stall along with hate speech that read "Why do black people exist." The school says once it was reported, everything was immediately removed.

In Jones' letter, he says they haven't identified who is responsible but will take "appropriate disciplinary measures".

"That diversity makes TJ a special place to call home and where everyone should lead with empathy and respect," Jones said in his letter.

Dallas ISD issued the following statement in response to the incident:

Dallas ISD is a special place where we embrace an array of cultures and backgrounds that we proudly serve each day. Derogatory language and offensive acts have no place in our schools and will not be tolerated. The disparaging remarks in question were removed immediately, and we are working to identify those responsible, who will be disciplined appropriately. Our schools are safe, welcoming environments where students can grow and learn. We are committed to cultivating spaces where empathy and respect are commonplace.

Earlier this month the high school celebrated the newly renovated campus after an EF-3 tornado rocked the area back in 2019. Dozens of classrooms have new, updated, contemporary furniture and state-of-the-art technology.
