KELLER -- There are new developments on a proposal that would protect LGBT students from discrimination in Keller.
Many students at the high school think it's about time the school district get with the times and switch up the wording in its student handbook.
The Freedom from Discrimination Clause talks about prohibiting offensive behaviors based on a person's race, religion, color and so forth. Sexual orientation is left out.
Meanwhile, the Dallas School District in a similar clause mentions gender identity, expression and sexual orientation. The Fort Worth School District uses similar language and has an entire section on gender-based harassment.
LGBT students in Keller want the same protection. They raised a red flag back in the spring after a teenager's claim of discrimination went viral.
Casey Akers, 16, took to Twitter to say school officials wouldn't let her ask a female student to prom.
School officials say they were trying to stop "promposals" or elaborate stunts to ask dates to prom.
Students and trustees met a couple months ago and reviewed the entire handbook.
Thursday night, a decision will be made on how to move forward.
