FORT WORTH A seventh grade student stopped breathing during a football game Tuesday night at Azle Junior High School.
Superintendent Ray Lea said the student was involved in rough tackle on the field in the game against Highland.
A school nurse grabbed an automated external defibrillator and quickly restored signs of life to the unnamed 13-year-old student.
The AED units have only become common at schools in the last few years.
There was a law that was passed a couple of years ago, might be four years ago, that required all schools to have defibrillators, Lea said. I may be its biggest fan right now.
A CareFlite helicopter ambulance rushed the student to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for further observation. He was doing well, Lea said, and dozens of parents and students could be seen streaming into the emergency room for support.
The game was canceled following the medical emergency.
