Rain brings flood concern to Oak Cliff apartments

Tenants at Oasis Apartments in Southeast Oak Cliff say flooding is major concern each time there is significant rain.
Residents at The Oasis apartments in Southeast Oak Cliff say access to their units is made difficult whenever it rains.

DALLAS — When heavy rainfall hits Southeast Oak Cliff, neighbors at the Oasis Apartments on East Ledbetter Drive say they get nervous. Tenants in the complex say flooding is a major issue that leads to major frustration.

"It's real bad," Lisa Wright shouted as she stood on the stairs of her apartment watching rain ponding around her door.

"We're literally stuck in our house when it rains, and after the rain," said tenant Marilyn Davis.

Davis, who is disabled, said every time there is significant rainfall, it leaves the courtyards flooded, and water creeps dangerously close to or into first floor units.

"Every time," tenant Brandon Smith shouted. "Every time it rains!"

Some neighbors have been taking photos over a period of months to document the flooding as a regular problem around the complex.

Families say they are frustrated that more is not being done to minimize the issue.

"We have mold all in the restroom," said Keyera Woodberry. "We've told them plenty of times to come fix it, and they still haven't."

Neighbors said the flooding is causing raw sewage leaks around the complex, among other issues.

"It's that bad," Wright said. "You've got snakes crawling around now."

Management and workers inside the leasing office did not want to comment or answer any questions from WFAA about the tenants' flooding concerns.

For now, residents say they are just praying the rain doesn't get worse.

The flooding concerns at Oasis Apartments has also been on the radar of the Kessler Heights Neighborhood Association. That local group says it has been trying to work with the City of Dallas to get the issues addressed.
