OCALA, Fla. — The SMU equestrian team captured its second consecutive National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) National Championship last month.
The Mustangs beat top-seeded TCU 12-7 on April 20 from the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Fla.
"It is incredibly special to win back-to-back national championships," SMU Head Coach Carol Gwin said. "This group has accomplished so much over the last four years. We have won two national championships, been national runners-up, won conference championships and earned countless awards. I am so proud of this group, and we will never forget this moment."
The title is the second straight won by the equestrian team and the school's tenth total.
Only two other equestrian programs have won back-to-back national championships, SMU officials said. Those two teams were Auburn (2018-2019) and Georgia (2003-2004; 2008-2010).
SMU's first title in 2023 ended a longtime streak of Big 12 and SEC schools winning the equestrian national championship, dating back 21 years to 2002.
SMU finished its season 12-4, which included a five-meet win streak to end the year. The Mustangs are also 25-5 over the course of their two national championship seasons.
