Royse City police investigating fatality after high water washes away vehicle on I-30 service road

Multiple vehicles were stuck in high water Wednesday on the service roads of I-30 near FM 1565.

ROYSE CITY, Texas — The Royse City Police Department is investigating a fatality that occurred Wednesday morning after high water washed away a vehicle stuck on the I-30 service road near FM 1565 in Hunt County.

Police responded to the incident at about 11 a.m. Wednesday along with the Royse City Fire Department, Union Valley Fire Department and the Cash Fire Department after hearing reports of several vehicles stuck in high water on the service roads, police said.

Two witnesses told police they saw a silver SUV being washed off the roadway on the north service road and sink into a section of Brushy Creek underneath I-30, police detailed.

The vehicle and driver could not be found, police said, due to the dangerously swift water flooding the area at the time.

On Thursday, police say a swift water rescue team from the Cash Fire Department found a sunken vehicle 15 to 20 feet under the water, and a dive team from the Wylie Fire Department helped remove the vehicle from the water.

The vehicle was unoccupied when it was recovered, police detailed. Police found a dead elderly man farther down the creek bank.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending a positive ID.

Royse City police are still investigating the case.
