ROWLETT, Texas — A major gas leak is under control after a contractor dug into a 4-inch line, according to Rowlett Mayor Blake Margolis.

The leak happened near Garland ISD's Coyle Middle School, which was evacuated as a result. According to GISD, students and staff walked to Stephens Elementary.

Coyle Principal Cherelle Wilson said students will remain at Stephens Elementary for the remainder of the day, so parents should pick them up there. If your child takes the bus, they will be picked up at Stephens and dropped off at their usual spot.

"Our top priority is the safety and security of everyone in our building. We always follow district safety protocols, as was done this afternoon." Wilson said in a letter to parents. "I thank our staff for maintaining safety at our campus."

Atmos Energy told WFAA crews successfully contained the gas leak and are making the necessary repairs.
