PARKER COUNTY, Texas โ Parker County authorities shot and killed a man while serving a warrant in Weatherford on Thursday night, officials said.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Hancock Drive, off Fort Worth Highway.
Parker County Sheriff Russ Authier said his deputies, along with Weatherford police, were serving a warrant at the location. The person they were serving the warrant to fired at officers, Authier said.
Officers then returned fire, killing the man, who family members identified as Marcos Guerra. It was not clear whether sheriff deputies or police shot him.
The Weatherford Police Department's only K-9, Jack, was shot during the incident but is expected to recover. Weatherford police said Jack was struck by a bullet that went through his ear and paw.
"A happy 'pupdate' for today! K-9 Jack is resting today and in good spirits," the Weatherford Police Department shared Friday afternoon. "We cannot thank you enough for your prayers and well wishes for Jack. We are beyond grateful for the outstanding level of care provided by the staff at the I-20 Animal Hospital, where nurses even treated him to a special snack after his heroic night."
Weatherford Police Chief Lance Arnold considers him one of the most important parts of their crime fighting team. Since the shooting, Arnold has heard from canine handlers at surrounding police departments in North Texas. He is confident that K-9 Jack will return to duty after recovery.
Guerra's sister, Anita Palacios told WFAA that she and her family are desperately trying to make sense of her brother's death. Palacios said she had spend the entire day with her brother before the shooting. She's now recalling the good things about him.
"He would give you the shirt off his back," said Palacios.
She also told WFAA about their last day together.
"He called me and asked me if I could go pick him up from where he was at. I took him to my house. He was with us all day. He was with my kids all day," Palacios said. "I was working and the kids were with him... He was on the computer. Then, after he showered, I gave him clothes. Then, he said, 'Hey.' I said, let's go get your phone fixed. I took him to the AT&T store and then I dropped him off here at 4:55 p.m."
Palacios also shared the last words she had with her brother before he was killed in the officer-involved shooting.
"He said, I love you, and I said, I love you," said Palacios.
His family is searching for answers that led up to the deadly incident. They believe Guerra was on a better track in life after spending time behind bars.
"It's hard because when he came home, it was a promise that he made, you know, he wasn't going to go back," Palacios said. "He was going to be good."
Chief Arnold could not comment on the deadly shooting Friday. The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation, officials said.
Guerra's family plans to remember him during a candlelight vigil, where his sister will also share parts of their last conversation.
"No matter the wrongs he did, he would be the first person to help anybody," said Palacios.
WFAA learned from the Parker County Sheriff's Office that the arrest warrant for Guerra remains sealed due to the fact that it had not been served as planned Thursday evening. Any new or additional information on the deadly shooting will come from the Texas Rangers after the investigation is complete.
