PALO PINTO COUNTY, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has given away a total of $4.5 million in trail grants for 16 projects across the state, including a trail expansion at North Texas' Palo Pinto Mountains State Park.
According to TPWD, the funds -- in large part -- come from the National Recreational Trails Fund, which supports recreational trail construction and renovation.
These funds are generated through the federal gas tax and they must be used for a mix of both motorized and non-motorized trail projects, TPWD says.
In addition to the federal gas tax, the Texas Legislature is granting another one-million dollars every year to the program, according to TPWD.
Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is the recipient of one of the larger cuts of the grant as it is getting $300,000 to construct six more miles of multi-use natural surface trails.
Other areas that received $300,000 in grants include Bandera, Crockett, Hays, Madison, Marion and Webb counties.
It is not yet known when the construction on the new trails will begin.
