FRISCO, Texas — Starting high school is a pivotal moment in a teenager's life and 14-year-old Deandre wants more than anything to find a forever family who will help guide him through it.
Deandre is today's Wednesday's Child.
His caseworker describes Deandre as energetic, fun, and a sports lover. So it's safe to say he enjoyed his day at Main Event in Frisco.
"He's my friend. He's 14 but he's my friend too," Kamryn Kelly said smiling.
Deandre says the best way to describe him is with one word - athletic.
"I like football, basketball, and track and I'm looking forward to doing powerlifting," he said.
When Deandre enters high school as a freshman this fall, he wants to join the powerlifting team at his school.
"I like competing in sports. It's like fun to me. I want to become a professional football player," he said.
Kelly says he needs a family with energy to keep up with him and who will always be there for Deandre.
"When we think about family, we think about people that don't give up on us and he deserves a family that's not gonna give up on him," she said.
Finding a forever family who will allow him to remain in contact with his three sisters is also important.
"It makes me happy talking to them," he said adding that he worries about their well-being.
Kelly recently traveled out of state with Deandre to see his adult sister.
"He thinks about them and he loves on them and although they're safe, he still worries about them. We try to keep him in contact with them. We just came back from a visit with one of them in Mississippi," said Kelly.
Deandre has been in foster care for 4 years and deeply desires adoptive parents to help guide him through his high school career. He's excited about new beginnings.
"I want a family that's nice. A family that cares about me," he said.
And if they love the Dallas Mavericks as much as he does, well, that's a major plus!
The Mavs surprised Deandre with some serious merch including hats, clothing, basketballs, and much more.
"Thank you!" he said with a beaming smile.
"He's been spoiled rotten, and he knows it," said Kelly.
Her prayer is that he finds adoptive parents who will also spoil him, but most importantly who will show Deandre he can trust a family to be there forever.
"My hope is that Deandre will find a family that will love on him, that will adopt him and be able to support him through adulthood and through college and sports," she said.
