WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas — Multiple guns and improvised explosive devices were found in a suspicious van in a White Settlement neighborhood Tuesday morning, police said.
According to the White Settlement Police Department, officers responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle in the 9200 block of Jason Lane at about 5:29 a.m.
Upon arrival, police said officers found a van with an adult man in the driver's seat. While approaching the van, officers saw that the man had a handgun in his lap, according to police.
According to police, officers talked to the man, realized he was having a mental health issues. During their discussion, officers were eventually able to remove the man from the van when he didn't have the gun in his possession, officials say.
Police said officers then saw what they thought was an improvised explosive device on the front passenger seat and a second device in the back of the van.
According to police, during this time, a perimeter was set up while additional agencies responded to the scene.
At about 5:53 a.m., police said the Fort Worth Police and Fire Departments and the Bomb Squad arrived at the scene and confirmed that the two devices were explosives.
In addition to the explosives and the handgun that were located in the front of the van, a rifle, and AR-style pistol were also found, according to police.
Police said the Federal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded and assisted with the removal of the explosives.
According to police, the man was taken into custody and placed in a local medical facility, pending further criminal charges.
White Settlement PD said detectives are working to obtain search warrants to continue the investigation and investigators are working with federal agencies to determine what his intentions were.
